Built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London and the rebirth of the City. The Monument is 202 feet tall - the exact distance between it and the Bakery in Pudding Lane where the fire started.

Since it's construction it has been the tallest independent stone column in the world, having 311 steps that you can spiral up for the modest price of £3.00 and you even get a certificate to prove you have done so. Once up there the views are fantastic, but it's not for the faint hearted.
